1000s of fresh websites are registered each day on the world wide web, each hoping to strike gold. On the internet, as with offline businesses, most of these new sites will not achieve their intended and hoped for targets. Much too many new webmasters go into the process blindly, designing sites without doing the necessary research, and doing the appropriate preparation. There are also a lot of website owners who don't understand what search engine optimization (SEO) is, how it can help, and how to execute it in the right way.

Admittedly, some sites do become successful despite this oversight, but these are in the minority. To guarantee your website's success, you will need to put in a bit of hard work into doing SEO right.

When SEO is considered right from the beginning of the internet venture, it will give you a significant edge over your competition and contrary to most other services you will invest in, SEO will nearly always produce more profits than it costs. It should be stressed here, that nothing and nobody can guarantee your site's rankings within the major search engines. On the other hand, applying a few proven SEO techniques should see your rankings get better in Google, and the other top search engines on the web today.

Far too often though, website owners think of search engine optimization merely as an afterthought, often long after their web sites have already launched. Failing to familiarize yourself with the long-lasting benefits that SEO can lend to your site, while not the end of the world, will guarantee that you are not getting as much out of your web investments as you could.

Dependent on the size and classification of your business, and website, there are several groups of people who should be involved in SEO for your website. These can include the Marketing, as well as the IT departments. For smaller websites, these roles are covered by just one person, usually the webmaster. In many larger businesses though, it is possible to find several people in each department working on, and involved with the site's SEO. Quite often too, businesses will hire SEO experts to help them get their SEO strategies perfectly correct.

Broadly speaking, search engine optimization can be considered as the sum of all the work required to produce large amounts of targeted traffic from search engines, third party websites, and internet directories. Its utmost goal is to drive lots of targeted traffic. That's the sum and total of it really. SEO will involve analysis both onsite, and also of third party websites. Getting the correct website development and architecture is as essential as back linking.

Knowing your competition requires analysis of competing sites, and keyword research, leading to the appropriate content development and promotion. This stage is very important, as a large component of SEO is writing the right content, *and* building back links. The importance of content cannot be underestimated, but similarly, neither can the importance of increasing the number of incoming links to pages within your website, particularly for search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Search engine marketing (SEM) on the other hand, refers mainly to the use of pay-per-click (PPC) advertising campaigns on search engines. One of the most popular examples of this, is Google's AdWords program. SEO and SEM do share a few common elements, however they are different. PPC advertising is mainly thought to be much easier to put into place, typically delivering new visitors to your site in a few hours. Therefore, many online website owners sometimes confuse SEO with SEM. Doing this however, could be very expensive.

SEO does have a cost attached to it. It does take work and effort, and it can be expensive too. That said though, it is certainly the cheapest way of driving traffic to your website available today. SEO will deliver long term traffic and value to your site. SEM stops sending traffic the minute you stop paying for your PPC adverts. SEO on the other hand, will carry on to deliver visitors to your site long after your campaign ends.
